Diploma of
sport coaching
and development

If you are passionate about sport and are interested in working on field with athletes, then the Diploma of Sport Coaching and Development is for you! Study a mixture of sports and exercise science, sport coaching, talent identification, game development, sport management, human physiology and anatomy subjects.

The course is delivered at IKON Park, the home of the Carlton Football Club (six subjects), and the Melbourne campus of La Trobe University at Bundoora (two subjects).

Students will undertake four subjects each semester and will involve approximately 12 – 16 hours of class time and placement activities per week. Students enrolled in the Diploma of Sport Coaching and Development will also complete a non-academic sport program (strength and conditioning, nutrition, other sport-related activities) with the Carlton Football Club.

HOURS OF WORK BASED PLACEMENT

Alongside the academic side of the
diploma, every student at the Carlton
College of Sport has the opportunity to
complete 100 hours of placement within
the Carlton Football Club and with

COURSE DETAILS

he Diploma of Sport Coaching and Development is a one-year full-time course, comprising of eight core subjects.

Successful completion of the course requires passing 120 credit points of core subjects. It is classified as a Level 5 qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework. Students who complete the Diploma of Sport Coaching and Development will also receive their Certificate 3 & 4 in Health and Fitness, as well as a Level 1 Coaching Accreditation.

This course is only available to Australian domestic students.

Applicants are required to apply for admission to this course directly with La Trobe University.

HOW TO APPLY

CURRENT YEAR 12 STUDENTS

If you are a current Year 12 student studying VCE, VCAL or unscored VCE (or the equivalent Year 12 qualification in your state), you will need to apply via VTAC and preference your chosen Carlton College of Sport diploma.

  1. Create a VTAC user account or login to your existing account.
  2. Once logged in, start your course application.
  3. Fill out your education history, include your highest level of study (this should be year 12) and answer if you have undertaken VCAL or any secondary units throughout your secondary education.
  4. Select your course preferences, by either entering the course code or using the search function. You can select up to eight preferences and must note at least one preference to continue. Search ‘Carlton College’ or enter course code 2101112052 for the Diploma of Sport Coaching and Development.
  5. Review your application details and confirm that the information is correct.
  6. Pay your application fee.

Please note: you are able to change your preferences once you have submitted your course application. To change your preferences, you won’t need to re-pay your original application fee.   

 

NON-SCHOOL LEAVERS

  1. Head to the La Trobe University website to apply directly and create a new profile, or log in if you have previously submitted an application. (Note: if you have trouble creating or accessing your account, call Ask La Trobe on 1300 135 045)
  2. Begin your application, fill out your education history.
  3. Select ‘Carlton College of Sport’ and search. Add the diploma you want to apply for to your preference list. Save and continue.
  4. Fill out your personal details then continue to fill out your study history.
  5. Read through and check that all details are correct, then submit your application.
  6. Provide the relevant documents and upload these into your application.

Please note: you can still access your account to upload any documents after you have submitted your application. If you are waiting on results, you can upload them into your application once you have obtained them.

Fees and costs

COURSE FEES
$21,000 per 120 credit points (Note: 120 credit points represents full-time study for one year).
This course is categorised as an Employer Reserved Place and therefore falls under FEE-HELP,
not HECS-HELP. The Australian Government does not subsidise Employer Reserved Places. Instead,
it provides access to the FEE-HELP loan scheme to assist eligible fee paying students with paying
their tuition fees.

OTHER COSTS

  • Police Certificate (Victorian Police Certificate or Fit2Work) — AUD$45 (annually)
  • Working with Children Check (no cost)
  • A First Aid and CPR certificate (AUD$110). The CPR component must be renewed annually and the
    First Aid component must be renewed every three years. Please note that this course is not conducted
    by La Trobe University.
  • Some outreach activities associated with the Carlton College of Sport program may incur costs, and
    these will vary depending on location.

Prerequisite

VCE: A study score of at least 20 in English or at least 25 in English as an Additional Language (EAL).
