Elite Sport Business

If you’re a sports enthusiast interested in what happens behind the scenes of a professional sporting club, including how sport is managed, presented and promoted, then the Diploma of Elite Sport Business is for you.

The program combines studies in a range of sport topics including management, marketing and media and is delivered at IKON Park, the home of the Carlton Football Club (six subjects) and the Melbourne campus of La Trobe University at Bundoora (two subjects). 

Students will undertake four subjects of study each semester and will involve approximately 12 to 16 hours of class time or club-related activity per week. Students enrolled in the Diploma of Elite Sport Business will also have the opportunity to network with professionals in sport through the Industry Seminar series.

Students who complete the Diploma of Elite Sport Business are able to proceed straight into the second year of a Bachelor of Business. Former students have gone on to study:

Students may decide to head directly into the workforce upon completing their studies at Carlton College. Former students are currently working in jobs such as: 

 

  • Community Officer at the Carlton Football Club

HOURS OF WORK-BASED PLACEMENT

Alongside the academic side of the diploma, every student at the Carlton College of Sport has the opportunity to complete 100 hours of placement within the Carlton Football Club and with industry partners. Read more about placement opportunities here.

During her studies in 2020, Chelsea demonstrated her committment to her studies and expressed an interest in working within the community. Now, Chelsea is the Community Officer at the Carlton Football Club.

course details

The Diploma of Elite Sport Business is a one-year full-time course, comprising of eight core subjects.

Successful completion of the course requires passing 120 credit points of core subjects. It is classified as a Level 5 qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Only available to Australian domestic students.

Applicants are required to apply for admission to this course directly with La Trobe University.

Essential requirements are compulsory requirements that apply to all applicants. These requirements need to be read in conjunction with applicant specific admission criteria.

Carlton College of Sport | Essential requirements for selection and application
All applicants must have been offered a place or accepted into the Carlton College of Sport.

Essential requirements for enrolment or graduation

Police Record Check
Applicants will be required to hold a valid National Police Record Check for professional placements as part of this course. For more information see Victoria Police’s National Police Record Check webpage.

Working with Children Check
Applicants will be required to hold a valid Working with Children Check (WWCC) prior to undertaking professional placements as part of this course. Students can apply for a free Volunteer WWCC. For more information, see the Working with Children Check website.

First Aid / CPR Certificate
Students will be encouraged to complete a First Aid Qualification as part of the Diploma. There is no First Aid Requirement to undertake the Diploma.

This course is not available for application through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).

Fees and costs
Course Fees
$21,000 per 120 credit points (Note: 120 credit points represents full-time study for one year).
This course is categorised as an Employer Reserved Place and therefore falls under FEE-HELP, not HECS-HELP. The Australian Government does not subsidise Employer Reserved Places. Instead, it provides access to the FEE-HELP loan scheme to assist eligible fee paying students with paying their tuition fees.

Other costs

  • Police Certificate (Victorian Police Certificate or Fit2Work) — AUD$45 (annually)
  • Working with Children Check (no cost)
  • A First Aid and CPR certificate (AUD$110). The CPR component must be renewed annually and the First Aid component must be renewed every three years. Please note that this course is not conducted by La Trobe University.
  • Some outreach activities associated with the Carlton College of Sport program may incur costs, and these will vary depending on location.

Prerequisite

VCE: A study score of at least 20 in English or at least 25 in English as an Additional Language (EAL). 

NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.
