Written by Jack Carroll, Elite Sport Business student in 2020.

Eight months ago I was privileged enough to be asked to write up an article for the Carlton College of Sport that was set to feature on the Carlton Football club social  media pages, and the Carlton College social media. Eight months later, I have been given that huge honour again.

This time things are different. I am still  a student at Carlton College (they can’t keep me away!) but this time round I am a new Diploma, we have had a global pandemic hit us which has changed what normal is, I have picked up some more work and passed my first Diploma in Coaching and Development.

I officially passed my Diploma of Sport Coaching and Development on Saturday March 7 and on March 10 I was back hitting the books again with the Carlton College of Sport studying Elite Sport Business.

Due to Coronavirus the way we studied has changed. We went from face to face learning to online which certainly took some adjusting too. Even though it was quite difficult for all of us to adapt, the staff at Carlton College all had great activities and initiatives to keep us all engaged and motivated through semester. The strong character of the other students has really shown as we have become a close-knit family through the first semester of 2020, and almost at times felt like a second family to many of us.

Since my last post, I have gained work through the Melbourne Football Club as a Supporter Experience Officer. This included working at Melbourne vs North Melbourne AFLW match, and working in the canteen for a Melbourne Storm trial game at Casey Fields.

I have also picked up a Head Coaching role at Ashwood Junior Football Club which was available through my work with AFL Victoria (thank you Dale for helping me out) which has been an unreal experience to date, and only just getting started now we have a date to work towards.

For anyone who is considering joining the Carlton College of Sport for next year or beyond, this is more than just a Diploma, and more of just a University. The staff are genuine people who intend to make this experience over the twelve months a special one.

The catch ups with Sam Walsh, guest lectures with Andy Maher, Maddy Prespakis, Ed Curnow and many other great people involved with the club make it not only a special year, but an unforgettable year which you wouldn’t get at any other university. And lastly the great stories, such as my own to come out of the course last year. If you work hard enough, maybe you can become the next Jack Carroll of Carlton College of Sport.
