Austen's journey in the sport industry began after completing Year 12 VCE in 2015 at Bellarine Secondary College in Drysdale, Victoria. Initially, he pursued a Diploma of Sport Coaching and Development, which laid the foundation for his career in the sport industry.

His first job was cleaning the butcher meat room at a local IGA after school. However, his first role in sport was as a Game Development Officer for AFL - Australian Football League. This position marked the beginning of his professional journey in the sport industry.

After moving to Melbourne, Austen worked at an ALDI supermarket before transitioning to his current roles. He now works as a freelance sports commentator and holds a position at AFL House as a Disability & Inclusion Events Officer. Additionally, he is a development coach for the U18 Northern Knights girls’ side and a freelance researcher, contributing to Channel 9's award-winning 2024 Paralympics coverage.

In 2022, Austen completed a diploma of Sport Coaching and Development at the Carlton College of Sport (CCoS). The College played a pivotal role in his career development. One of his favourite placement opportunities was when AFL Victoria visited CCoS to deliver an Auskick clinic. Austen, who was working at a caravan factory at the time, left work early to attend the clinic. His enthusiasm and willingness to learn impressed the AFL Victoria staff, leading to a shadow shift and eventually a job offer.

Austen highlights that the best part of his time at CCoS was the engaging learning environment. Unlike his high school experience, CCoS provided an atmosphere where he was eager to learn and excel. This experience helped him develop great study habits, which have been beneficial in his roles as a broadcaster and researcher. The connections he made at CCoS also proved valuable, as he now works with many of his former classmates within the industry.

Austen's passion for sport has been a driving force since childhood. After high school, he spent several years working in various trades and hospitality roles until he reached a breaking point while working at a caravan factory. Feeling depressed and unfulfilled, he sought advice from his aunt, who introduced him to CCoS. Six months later, he was working for the AFL and studying at CCoS.

His first job in the sport industry was as a Game Development Officer for AFL Victoria, where he started by running Auskick sessions at primary schools. This role eventually expanded to overseeing the Victorian Wheelchair and Blind Football Leagues.

Austen attributes his career success to having basic manners, respect, enthusiasm and a strong work ethic. By consistently demonstrating these values, he built a good reputation and seized opportunities as they arose. His willingness to say yes to everything and be open to people has led to numerous opportunities, including his current roles.

Austen is currently the Lead Game Development Officer for AFL Victoria and a freelance sports broadcaster. His responsibilities include supporting the delivery and ongoing participation in various football programs, as well as overseeing the Victorian Wheelchair and Blind Football Leagues. He also leads the organization of events and manages media roles for the Inclusion Leagues within AFL Victoria.

Austen's ultimate ambition is to become a prominent voice in AFL and AFLW within the media landscape. He aims to secure a position with a major network or radio station to commentate on the game he loves. Additionally, he aspires to coach at a high level within an AFL/AFLW organization.

Austen advises those looking to break into the sport industry to be proactive and make their own luck. He emphasizes the importance of starting with programs like CCoS, which create valuable opportunities. Identifying one's focus and actively working towards it is crucial for success in the sport industry.
