Paige's Journey: Turning a Passion for Sport into a Career in Fan Engagement

For Paige, a career in sport has always felt like the perfect fit.

After completing Years 11 and 12 at SEDA College, Paige had already experienced internships and exposure to elite sporting environments. While those opportunities confirmed her passion for sport, she knew she wanted to take the next step and gain even more hands-on industry experience.

"I wanted more and to further my career," Paige said.

Paige first discovered Carlton College of Sport (CCoS) as a Year 10 student through her connection as a long-time Carlton member. However, her passion for the sporting industry started even earlier than this.

"What attracted me to working in sport originally was Abbey Holmes. I remember dressing up as a sports reporter in primary school. I've always loved the facts and staying up to date with sport."

That passion has translated directly into her studies at CCoS, where Sports Reporting has quickly become a favourite subject.

"It was my dream as a kid, learning about everything that goes into match reports and content plans has been so cool."

Alongside Sports Reporting, Paige has also enjoyed studying marketing and exploring how organisations connect with audiences and promote their brand.

One of the biggest adjustments during her time at CCoS was relocating from a regional town to Melbourne.

"The challenging part was commuting and sometimes missing opportunities because of distance but moving to Melbourne has also opened so many doors and allowed me to take part in experiences I wouldn't have otherwise."

Through the industry placement program, Paige has gained valuable insight into professional sport while continuing to build her confidence and industry skills.

Some of her favourite experiences have come within Carlton's Fan Engagement team.

"Having been on the fan side of the Club for so long, it's so exciting and rewarding getting to connect with members and give them really cool experiences."

A particular highlight has been the Junior ‘Baggers clinics, where junior Carlton Football Club members come onsite at IKON Park to engage with the AFL and AFLW playing groups.

"Getting to see how excited all the kids are to be training with the players is something you really can't get anywhere else."

Placements have also provided Paige with a deeper appreciation for the work that happens behind the scenes.

"Seeing everything that goes into press conferences - from media briefings and player preparation through to reporting afterwards - was incredible."

While Paige remains passionate about journalism and media, her experiences have helped her discover another area of the industry she loves.

"CCoS has really opened up the fan engagement side for me. Working with the fans has been so rewarding because they're what truly make our Club what it is."

Outside of her studies, Paige has recently commenced as a Customer Experience Supervisor at the State Netball and Hockey Centre and is actively involved in netball coaching, continuing to develop her leadership, management and communication skills.

Reflecting on her experience, Paige says CCoS has helped her grow both personally and professionally.
