Jack's Journey: Building Industry Experience Through Every Opportunity
Carlton College of Sport students have achieved so much across their time at the Carlton Football Club. Hear from one of our current students who has taken full advantage of the opportunities presented to them.
For Jack, sport has always been part of who he is.
Born in Western Australia before moving to Victoria at age seven, Jack grew up in a passionate sporting family and spent much of his childhood playing football, cricket and basketball.
"I've been obsessed with sport my whole life,” Jack said.
With a dream of working in professional sport, Jack attended a careers expo during high school where he first learned about Carlton College of Sport.
"When I found out I could expand my knowledge of the sporting world while gaining placement opportunities with Carlton, I knew it was what I wanted to do after school."
One of the subjects that has had the biggest impact on Jack's development has been Foundations of Professional Communication.
"I found learning how important communication is in a professional environment really interesting. It helped me become a better communicator and that's something that will help in any future role."
While balancing study, placement and travel presented challenges, Jack remained focused on making the most of every opportunity.
"Before getting my licence, I was travelling three hours to get to campus. I used that time on public transport to study."
Through the industry placement program, Jack has experienced a variety of roles that have strengthened his understanding of the sport industry.
One standout experience has been working as part of Carlton's Mascot Escort game-day program.
"Getting access to be on the ground was unbelievable."
He has also enjoyed working alongside Carlton's recruiting and analysis team.
"It's incredibly insightful hearing professional communication between coaches and seeing how those environments operate."
It is commonly said that the sport industry is one based on networking and connections, and for Jack, the placements have reinforced the importance of relationships and teamwork within sport.
"Everybody is connected and willing to help each other. To succeed in the industry, you have to communicate with others."
While Jack's long-term goal remains working within a professional sporting club, his placement experiences have broadened his perspective.
"I've become really interested in the business side of sport and event delivery as well. Ultimately, I just want to work for a professional sporting club in any capacity."
Reflecting on his year so far, Jack believes CCoS has helped him better understand the many pathways available within sport.
