STANDING OUT WITH JAMES APOSTOLIDIS
From the age of four, when he first attended a NAB AFL Auskick session, James Apostolidis has had a passion for sport. Now, in 2024, he is turning that passion into a career, with a role as AFLW Recruiting Scout and Operations Coordinator at the Carlton Football Club.
A position he obtained through the connections he built during his time studying the Diploma of Sport Coaching and Development at Carlton College of Sport, James couldn’t be more excited to be honing his skills in an elite environment.
“I have always wanted to work in sport in one way or another” he says. “So, following my placement with the recruiting team in 2023, I stayed in touch with them to express my interest in pursuing a career there.”
“I had a real willingness to try and make the most of my network and I’m so happy to say that now it has helped me land a job in the industry.”
His contact and consistent follow-up clearly well received, James was offered the dual role across recruiting and operations in early 2024.
Wide-ranging, he is responsible for attending Coates League, National Championship and VFLW games in order to compile comprehensive scouting reports for the AFLW team.
On the field, James helps to manage training and match-day logistics to ensure things go as smoothly as possible for the squad.
Buoyed by his experiences thus far, James believes he has a future in the industry and is ready to make a real difference.
“I am hoping to keep building my own skills and growing in the recruiting role, but more broadly to make a real impact” he explains.
“I think that I am working in a part of the industry where I can help to make a meaningful impression on the success of the AFLW and hopefully the broader development of women’s football.”
As he takes the next steps in his own career, James is keen to pass on the lessons he has learnt; both during his time at CCoS and now as he makes his way in the sporting industry.
"From the outset it is so important to build a strong network of connections” he explains. “We were able to do that through our various placement opportunities at the College and from there it is about seeking out opportunities to intern or volunteer.”
Aware that the sports industry can be a tough one to crack, he also stresses the importance of showing up with the right attitude.
“Ultimately, it comes down to staying persistent and enthusiastic with a willingness to learn and grow.
“If you have an infectious passion and you want to get better, you will always stand out from others.”
